Olson Windows Doors Siding and Roofing Featured in the Daily Herald

Product variety doesn’t ‘pigeonhole’ Olson customers

by Kim Mikus    September 15, 2014
Editor/Daily Herald Business Products

An interview with Brian Olson, co-owner of Olson Windows, Doors, Siding and Roofing in Barrington and Warrenville.

Q: Describe your business.

A: We specialize in exteriors. We sell and install many different brands of windows, doors, siding and roofing.

I think one of our biggest advantages over the big companies is that we carry multiple product lines. We aren’t pigeonholed into telling our customers that they need a specific window, siding, or roof. We can offer a wide range of options. So we really take the time to listen to the customers needs to see what is going to best suit their home and budget. Obviously if one of the big companies (manufacturers) comes out they are going to try their hardest to put their product in the customers house no matter what. We are also constantly updated on all the new products and new options, for most manufacturer’s.

We are really a one-stop exterior shop for all customer needs. Because we do windows, siding, roofs, doors, garage doors a new customer can start with a door and plan their future work. We have several customers that one year we did the windows the next we did their siding, and maybe their garage door after that.

Q: What made you start your business?

A: We worked for many years as window installers, and were always trying to make sure we were doing a quality job. As time went on, we realized we had very little control. Most contractors were only interested in production, not quality. So we decided to start our own business and approach it from an installation point of view, always trying to do things the correct way and not necessarily the cheapest way possible. We would end up with happy customers. So here we are 20 years later, two brothers that haven’t killed each other yet.

Q: What has been the most difficult obstacle in running a small business?

A: Our business is very cyclical. In the winter we can get very slow, so dealing with the ups and downs.

Q; What areas do you service?

A: All of the North and Northwest suburbs.

Q: Is this what you pictured yourself doing when you were young?

A: I had no plans of doing this when I was young. I was always fascinated by the ocean, a kid from the Midwest growing up watching Jacques Cousteau on the television.

Q: What did you want to be when you grew up?

A: I wanted to be an oceanographer.

Q: What keeps you up at night?

A: Sometimes I’ll sit up in bed because I forgot to order a window, or I’ll worry about a customer.

Q: If you could give one tip to a rookie business owner, what would it be?

A: Don’t grow too fast, and watch your overhead for those slow times. Also, try and go out of your way to please your customers.

What Is a Storm Chaser?

Beware of Storm Chasers signYou may have heard of the term ‘Storm Chaser’ before and can think of dare devils getting into there cars and chasing after tornadoes. In the contractor and home improvement world storm chasers are individuals or companies who quickly move into areas following severe weather looking to exploit homeowners and local businesses needing repairs due to storm-related destruction and damage. These con artists use this opportunity to pressure people into making impulsive, often expensive, decisions about construction work needed to repair damaged roof, siding, windows and cleanup. These scammers collect the homeowners’ insurance claim, perform shoddy work and then move on never to be seen again. So that means you’re totally out-of-luck for them to honor any warranty work after they complete the job. The situation in Illinois has gotten so severe that Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan has posted a public warning about Storm Chasers. You can read it here.

Helpful tips to protect you from storm chasers:

  • Ask for recommendations from people you know and trust and, whenever possible, use established local contractors.
  • Call the Attorney General’s Consumer Fraud Hotline to check out a contractor and to learn if any complaints have been filed against a particular business.
  • Even if there is a need to act quickly, shop around for the best deal. Get written estimates from multiple contractors, and don’t be rushed into a deal.
  • Get all of the terms of a contract in writing, and obtain a copy of the signed contract.
  • Never make full payment until all the work has been completed to your satisfaction.
  • Never pay in cash.
  • Be aware that you have the right to cancel a contract within three business days if you signed it based on the contractor’s visit to your home.
  • In the case of disaster repair, you have an additional right to cancel. If your insurance carrier denies coverage, you have the right to cancel the contract within five days of when your insurance carrier denies your coverage.
  • Ask to see required state and local permits and licenses. Insurance adjusters and roofers must be licensed by state agencies. If the contractor does not have a required license, or if the name on the license doesn’t match the name on the contractor’s business card or truck, that should raise a red flag.

In the event you find yourself in need of repair service following a severe weather incident it is wise to contact a local reputable contractor. Olson Windows Doors and Siding has been in business since 1979 and has an A+ Better Business Bureau rating and has been an Angie’s List ‘Super Service Award Company’ for the past four years in a row! We offer top industry leading products such as GAF Roofing, James Hardie Siding, Pella Windows and Doors and much more. We are family owned and operated and will treat you with the respect you deserve.

Therma-Tru Says “Slam the Door” on High Energy Bills

Therma-Tru DoorsWith Old Man Winter knocking at our door, experts at Therma-Tru remind homeowners to check their doors to make certain they are not leaking air, which can increase heating costs. Steel doors can be thermally conductive and result in the transfer of temperatures quickly from the interior to the exterior, and vice versa. Read more…

Pella Makes Some Cold Weather Considerations When Selecting Windows

In extremely cold climates, the window frame material you choose is important. It should provide excellent insulating qualities – in other words, it should keep the cold outside where it belongs.

Best Insulating Frames

Wood is an outstanding insulator? in fact it insulates 1,800 times better than aluminum. (When you were a child, ever remember sitting next to those old-fashioned aluminum school windows? Brrr.)

Fiberglass composite windows and doors are also an excellent choice, they offer the insulating quality of wood and won’t turn brittle or shatter in extreme cold.

Vinyl windows and patio doors feature insulating air chambers inside their frames to increase insulating performance.

Best Insulating Glass

Windows and doors with double or triple-panes Low-E insulating glass with argon (or another insulating gas) in between the panes will maximize the comfort and energy efficiency of your home when the temperature plunges. Pella windows and doors with Low-E triple-pane glass are top rated for energy efficiency among the best national brands.
