Identifying the Right Windows for Your Home

Several factors influence the decision to buy replacement windows. Start thinking about the problems you need the windows to solve, the overall style of the home and what materials might look best with your home's cladding.

Design

Many white windows look similar from the street, but consider just how many window design options and decisions you will face. First – your exterior color: would you prefer to complement your siding and trim or contrast with it? Have a natural wood or painted interior? What is common for your home’s style? Many traditional homes’ windows have grilles and unique grille patterns. Some materials perform better in dark colors. Start thinking about how you will customize the look of your new windows – inside and out. Common window types can be mixed and matched based on functional need, airflow and size:

  • Casement Windows
  • Awning Windows
  • Double Hung Windows
  • Picture Windows
  • Slider Windows
  • Bows and Bays, Shapes and More

Material

The window material impacts both the look and the performance of the window. Because a window is made of so many different parts you have to consider how they all work together. Manufacturing is responsible for the overall quality of the window but there are unique benefits inherent in each: vinyl, wood, fiberglass.

Energy Efficiency

All customers expect some energy efficiency gains from their new windows. Efficiency is generally driven by glass (number of panes, low-e coatings and argon gas), material (which has some thermal properties worth understanding) and installation quality (did we mention that first-class installation is the foundation of our business?). However, make sure to consider the direction your windows face and how important retaining heat is in winter, versus reducing the sun’s radiation in the summer. View NFRC Video on Efficiency.

Installation

There are two methods for installing windows, each determined by factors relating to: desired installation time, expected window performance, existing damage to interior or exterior framing/walls. A full frame installation is more time intensive but offers better opportunity to size the window to the opening and preserve viewing area and performance potential. A pocket installation is faster and allows the installer to order windows to fit an existing frame. Talk to us about what’s best for your home at the time of consultation.

Window Warranties

Window manufacturers’ warranties typically comprise coverage for glass and non-glass parts for a set period of time (5-15 years) and outline stipulations related to whom the warranty applies (fist homeowner for example). Important to understand is that manufacturer warranties do not cover labor and assume proper installation. This is one more reason to make sure the framing, structure and installers are on point prior to purchasing new windows.

Reviews

Make sure you are looking for product reviews and contractor reviews. Olson Windows, Doors, Siding, Roofing has several reviews from happy homeowners across the web (Houzz, Yelp, Facebook). Here is a great example of a glowing Beechworth Window review.

Understanding Types of Window Material

Vinyl Windows Fiberglass Windows Wood-clad or Wood Windows

The most popular material for windows in Chicago and beyond, vinyl is a trusted and easy to install material. It is usually available in a number of light shades (white being the most popular window color) and is the most cost effective and lightweight. Vinyl windows will address most needs for improved window form and function. And if you don’t want to paint – ever – this may be a great option for you.

Newer to windows but trusted for decades as a dependable material across several industries, fiberglass offers unrivaled strength and extreme energy efficiency. Fiberglass windows are becoming more popular for those with needs for climate durability and for those looking for darker window colors and lower maintenance.

True wood windows can be considered the ultimate in traditional window style. Beautiful and strong they offer a classic aesthetic that can complement wood and shingle exteriors and a variety of interior designs. Wood window materials typically need to be painted or stained and may require more maintenance over the years for upkeep. An alternative to all-wood windows is wood-clad, which identifies wood windows that include a layer of aluminum, fiberglass or vinyl on the exterior to protect the wood and reduce maintenance.
